Election 2020

Long line ups at polling stations from early this morning throughout S. Florida. Miami-Dade and Broward counties both reporting higher-than-expected turnouts today.

We’ve seen some shops boarded up as if a hurricane is approaching but nothing over the top.

With winner-takes-all 29 electoral votes, once again Florida is crucial. Am told the large Cuban community is expected to vote for Trump as many believe Biden has socialist tendencies and will raise taxes. Obama’s opening with Cuba also rubbed many Cubans the wrong way. (Although we did see some “Cubanos con Biden” signs).

Said one Miami-based contact: Estimates of the number of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. range from 10.5 million to 12 million, or approximately 3.2%–3.6% of the population. Less than half are Mexicans. He added: “And they actually pay taxes.”

Smart Fact: In almost a century of voting every victorious Republican presidential candidate has carried Florida.

Today is more the end of the US voting season or last day of voting rather than Election Day, given the unprecedented number of advance ballots cast. More Americans have voted in advance than two-thirds of all voters who cast ballots four years ago. Florida passed 9 million votes Monday. Far more Democrats than Republicans voted by mail while far more Republicans than Dems voted early in person.

One early Florida voter I spoke to said she flew cross-country to the state at the last moment as her absentee ballot hadn’t arrived in time. Once in the voting booth it took a half hour or so to complete the ballot as it was confusing and listed several judges up for re-election who needed researching.

While polls are an indication of the way things will go the truism still holds that the only result that really counts is the final vote count - whenever that happens.

According to one forecast model, Joe Biden has a 19-in-20 chance of winning the election. No presidential candidate in a race with so many polls has ever overcome the scale of deficit that Mr Trump faces today.
